(DMC) If you're looking for moment of departure from canon, it will be while Jack is ostensibly presiding over the Pelegostan chieftain ceremony.

- ★ CANON INFORMATION: http://pirates.wikia.com/wiki/Jack_Sparrow

- ★ PERSONALITY: There are a number of key points to Jack Sparrow's personality worth noting. At this point in his canon, Jack has pushed aside most pretense of being a silly drunk – a persona he often used in the past to disarm others and make them underestimate him. His one and only desperate goal is to find safety for both himself and his Black Pearl in order to avoid fulfilling his debt to Captain Davy Jones of the Flying Dutchman. His fear of Jones has driven him to be less flouncingly grandiose, so that he comes off darker and more desperate.

Jack is both self-seeking and self-serving. The most notable example of this in DMC is the fact that he is willing to trade Will Turner's soul in place of his own to satisfy Jones. This is because he is terrified of eternal punishment/death. His fear of damnation and eternal prison haunts him all the way through “On Stranger Tides,” and is an underlying theme of each film. At bottom, Jack is motivated by a deep and longstanding fear of punishment, especially in the form of death. As stated in the novella series, Jack also had to deal with family members, including an aunt and a grandmother, who abused and tried to kill him at a young age. Even his father turned on him and swore to execute him in “The Price of Freedom.” His entire life has been spent ensuring his own survival and having very few people he can trust. In DMC, he trusts no one and is paranoid. I would say that the only other character he might slightly trust is Joshamee Gibbs, and even so, he's not comfortable with taking Gibbs fully into his confidence. After Jack escapes the Venezuelan prison with the drawing of the key, the film reveals that not even Gibbs knows Jack's motivations.

In spite of being shrewd, wily, and good at understanding others' desires and motivations, Jack is terrible when it comes to judging others' character. He is a poor judge of honesty/character in others. Time and time again he has trusted others only to be betrayed – by his best friend Christophe in “The Price of Freedom,” by his father, his grandmother, and most recently by his old first mate, Hector Barbossa. While Jack is a gambler by nature, he often loses the bets he makes on people and ends up, as he did pre- “Curse of the Black Pearl,” watching someone else sail away with his ship. He will still not hesitate to use others to further his interests, although canonically beautiful women and children represent an achilles heel for him – witness the saving of Elizabeth, for example, in COTBP. In DMC, however, Jack is far less ready to lend a hand to innocents and is far more focused on himself and his own survival.

In spite of this weakness, Jack is otherwise quite good at managing people. He speaks in a confuddling, roundabout way, calculated to confuse and persuade his targets. He tends to target what people most desire to get them to go along with his plans, whether that means convincing Will Turner to join with him in saving Elizabeth (whom Will wants most – what Jack wants most is to barter Will's blood with Barbossa to get the Pearl back), or convincing Joshamee Gibbs to give his plans a listen in return for a drink. (Gibbs loves drinking even more than Jack.) He is dishonest to a great degree, especially as it serves his aforementioned self-interests. If honesty serves better? Jack will be honest – demonstrated in his dealings with Cutler Beckett in “At World's End.” He is quite a practical liar. Dishonesty seems to come more easily to him, however, probably out of habit. He can be charming and glib, is witty and gregarious and a good storyteller (how else could he get so famous?) and funloving. (“I love weddings! Drinks all around!”)

As a sailor and fighter, Jack has extraordinary nerve and calculated courage. He in part became successful as a pirate because of his daring. He will pull stunts that look deadly, such as firing himself from one ship to another using a canon, but each time he does something seemingly dangerous and impulsive, it must be known that he has thought it through and calculated any and all risks. He is not an impulsive person. Remember, he wants to remain alive at all costs. In this sense his mad decision making is practical and controlled. Jack is the quintessential debt-dodger and promise-breaker. It is said that he owes a quid to every pirate in the South Seas. He is a quick learner and hard worker, as shown in The Price of Freedom, especially in chapters that describe his rise from the position of First Mate to that of Captain. Also, it should be noted, that Jack is orderly and a neat freak on board ship. The Price of Freedom shows just how exacting he is about keeping things shipshape. (His rather authoritarian Fetch in “At World's End” also reveals this side of his personality.) He is a bit obsessive about his boat. He dresses the part of a pirate dandy and is particular about his ornamentation. So while a lot of fandom paints Jack as a drunken slob, the opposite is actually true. Well, not the drunken part. Jack does LOVE RUM.

One final point that should be made here is the fact that Jack prefers to be nonviolent. If there is a choice between a violent way and a nonviolent one, he will choose the latter and try to persuade his crew to do so as well. Time and time again he uses nonviolent tactics – such as sacking Nassau Port without firing a shot, or refusing to let Barbossa shoot the Spanish guards and instead defeating them with coconuts in “Stranger Tides.” He doesn't want to kill you. He will if he HAS to – “Please move! This shot is not meant for you!” – but it really takes a LOT to provoke Jack into a fight, and even more into drawing violence from him. The only character he WANTS to kill is Barbossa, and that's after the other man betrays him, maroons him, leaves him to die, and steals his beloved Pearl. The poem tattooed across his back gives insights into this, I believe. It is called “Desiderata” and is an anachronism, having been written in the early 20th century. It defines Jack (and all people) as Children of the Universe, and I think this is how Jacks sees himself at the best of times. He prizes the Black Pearl, freedom, and the sea above all else and believes that a life of piracy is the only life where one can attain this kind of existence.

- ★ COURT ALLIANCE: Unseelie. Jack thrives on chaos and is usually able to bring it into service for himself. For example, he finds sailing through a hurricane both exhiliarating and useful for putting off Naval pursuit. While he does have his own brand of honor, he's firmly in chaotic neutral territory at this point in his canon. He desires freedom above all else and what rules he does acknowledge are “mostly guidelines, anyway.” While Jack eschews violence for other methods, he does he does not like to see limitations placed on his movements or his desires – particularly the desire for immortality, which he sees as the ultimate freedom.

- ★ ABILITIES:

Knows many languages, including Pelegostan. Gets passive-aggressively confused over French a lot but who doesn't?

Unnaturally excellent swordsman and sailor. Jack was taught by an Italian Master in TPOF. He is driven in part by a desire to please his father into becoming an exceptional sailor as well. He wants to prove he can handle the family name by becoming a renowned pirate. Eventually duels an immortal pirate demon on a yardarm hundreds of feet above a swirling maelstrom as another ship is firing at him.

Strong abilities in persuasive speech. Leadership abilities. His leadership is tested in DMC. In fact, we almost see a mutiny happen after he escapes from prison. His desire to remain free causes him to press on in spite of this, and he is able to rein in the mutinous crew with (false) promises of great rewards.

Excellent knowledge of the weather and ability to predict weather. Jack can look at a blue sky and know a terrible storm is coming, as shown in COTBP.

Knowledge of the stars/navigation. This is a given for a pirate captain, but is demonstrated in TPOF. Jack is such a good sailor that he is able to get his cargo across the Atlantic faster than any other EITC captain. Beckett is so pleased he makes him a captain.

Has a storied history of being successful at disguising himself to fool others. Is almost hanged for impersonating a cleric of the Church of England. Later disguises himself as a judge to succesfully free Gibbs from prison.

Pillaging, daylight robbery, nighttime robbery. Drinking rum. (Mostly)

Fearless when it comes to heights.

- ★ INVENTORY: Jack has a magical compass that points toward what he desires most at any given time. For example, if he is in need of rum, it will point him toward a tavern. If he is tired, it will point toward bed. Etc. This does not have to be game breaking. For example, if he desires something that is impossible in-game, the compass may just spin aimlessly. This will frustrate him greatly, but oh well. He also possesses a sash that was woven for him by Princess Aiesha, whom he rescued in the prequel novel “The Price of Freedom.” While this sash is not exactly as strong as armor or a bulletproof vest, it does have a magic of protection woven into it that will enhance his self-defense. For example, a wound that might have otherwise been deadly will not have as bad an effect due to the sash. He is armed with a hangar and pistol and is wearing his beloved hat, of course.

( SAMPLES )

- ★ NETWORK SAMPLE: http://all7seas.dreamwidth.org/17726.html (A Luceti entry.)

- ★ LOG SAMPLE: “So Marcott named his boat 'Basil,' and I insisted it would bring him only misery.” Jack raised his bottle solemnly, but his only audience was fast asleep: some stranger who, hours earlier, had agreed to lift a glass with him and hadn't managed to hold his liquor. The pirate concealed his irritation. If you agree to lift a glass with a man, you've got to be in it for his stories and supply a few of your own as well. Only fair. He continued in spite of it all. “It would only bring misery and ruin. 'What about Oregano?' says I. 'What of that dark, spicy, dangerous herb? Pizzaro spreads it upon his pies. Always brought HIM luck.' But still he insisted upon Basil, and Basil she became. Or...he. Terrible bad luck to name your boat after a male vegetable.”

He had to pause in order to reach across the bar and swap out his empty bottle with a full one. “Erhum – where was I? Ah, yes. As one might expect, the Basil sank not long after. I believe Marcott were smuggling a great cargo of tomatoes at the time, and he didn't count on the sea being extra-ravenous that night. Cargo, crew, ship, sails, all of it – down. Down to the bottom to feed the carp. If only he'd heeded the old lessons of Pizzaro and his pies.” Jack nodded sagely to himself at the wisdom of it all. Conquistadors had to make proper names for themselves and their ships or they could expect nothing more than to become carp-niblets. “Carp-niblets is not where I'll end, mate. I swear it.” He clinked his bottle against that of his unconscious drinking companion, honoring the kind of hoarse, brown-glass oath whispered between men in tavernous places. “Not this pirate.”

comments

Ninth Silver Chalice | Action | Written

Part 1: Jack has been trying to winterize both the Ocean Spirit and the Joanna Joyce. It's not a one-man job, not at all at all -- and yet a big part of him feels he has to do this for Sokka Thunderaxe and for James Bloody Norrington. So at the lowest of low tides, he manages to haul both boats ashore for some well-needed tender love and care. At some point he'll build a fire on the beach so that he can take a break and warm his hands, but then it's straight back to work. Murphy the pony is an asset in helping to haul the boats up onto sturdy rolling logs. Murphy's crew of llamas (or are they alpacas?) are also trying to be of help in this regard.

Later, a cold and tired pirate will drop in to Good Spirits to do some warming up. Whilst in the tavern, he pens a quick journal message:

Who's taking Ocean Spirit in hand, then? Speak peacefully or forever hold your now.

comments

If you were to find a card of birthday sentiments for the most fearsome, ruthless, best-dressed, handsome, bold, daring, brilliant, intelligent, cunning, masterful, and downright adorable pirate, what sort would it be? Would it be poetical? I like poetical.

[Later he will be robbing the bakery disguised as a cardboard box a la Metal Gear.)

comments

Attention You Great Horde of Chundering Churls:

As many of you might know, I was heretoforehence shifted into a colossal nerd. You will all be relieved to hear that a giant furry creature named Gibbs sneezed me back into piratical glory with his too-roo-rooing and rooty-tooting. He's a many-splendored flying thing.

I will be taking donations at the Marauding Bridge, along with my good friend, James. Make sure to pack your pockets with pure golden doubloons, darlings. No wooden nickles, or I'll get creative with the lash.

Bonsoir,

Captain Jack Sparrow, bestest pirate in Luceti.

[Jack and Norrington, who are both possessed by Twila, will be hanging out marauding on the Marauding Bridge behind House 35.
[Jack Sparrow returns from a particularly difficult-to-endure Mallynap half-naked.

It will be hard to recognize him, though.
'Allo blokes and gorgeous, sweet ladies of Luceti!
Fourth Silver Chalice: Voice + Action | Open to All

The loss of Leonard McCoy is still a fresh open sore. Jack Sparrow needs distraction.

Last year, a willing crew constructed an ice skating rink nearby CH2. Then there was a skating party. The rink's wooden frame still stands, and Jack has spent the morning and a good part of the day at the busy work of scraping and cleaning the ice. Buckets of lukewarm water are thrown across the surface to smooth it; Jack, painstaking as always about his work, makes sure to sweep it into all the divots.

He finds some lights to string as well. Torches. By the afternoon, he's ready to make his announcements:

[Written/Private to Buffy Summers] Annie? You mind meeting me over by box-o-rooms number two? Bring your shiny blades, a warm cap, something nice in a thermos. I love you, sweetheart.

♥Jack. XO

[/private filter]

His more general announcement to the village comes later:

[Voice]

Best not to let all the work of friends here and gone go to waste, is it? Skating. Down by Housing Building Two. Come if you wish, don't if you don't. Anyone willing to chip in wood for a bonfire would be even more welcomer. Sparrow out.

[/Voice]

[[OOC: APPARENTLY I HAVE THE FLU RIGHT NOW tags might be slow. :( --- Sad, Sick Sazzy]]

comments

Third Silver Chalice: voice + MARAUDING ACTION

[Voice!]

Seems like Mistress Sheena recently let slip about a certain bridge in this village. Marauding Bridge, eh?

'S a dangerous place to be today, for this day is a black-hearted, black-clouded, cold-hearted, cold-clouded, cloud-hearted day indeed! A day to beware of vicious pirates and their vicious pirate ponies!

[At his words, Murphy, one of the resident farm ponies, gives a kind of world-weary Really, Jack? snort in the background. He's just along for the carrots.]

Wicked pirates and their frappucinos! Those? Italian! Me? I've heard the Batman is afraid of frappucinos.

[(He has no idea what a frappucino is but he has found one in the fridge at Seven and decided to give it a go.)]

Tell me this, Luceti? Is it a good day to live? Really bad eggs, eh? Hahaha! And let the ladies lift their skirts high!

[/Voice]

[Action]

Approach the bridge -- if you DARE. A pirate, well-wrapped in his coat against the cold and well-hatted because he's a pirate, is stalking about, sword and pistol at the ready. Black balloons have been tied to the bridge's railing. It's his birthday! And he knows how to live!

[/Action]

comments

Action/Accidental Voice: Everything Was Beautiful, Nothing Hurt

The man who strolls in a stumbling sort of way into the village is a sore sight. His face is bruised. There is a little fresh blood on his forehead, where there is an especially nasty wound. He is favoring his left leg, trying to put as little weight on it as possible.

And he is so. Freaking. Happy. Happy with life. Happy with you. In fact? He loves you! There is not a negative, sad, or angry bone in Jack Sparrow's body. There might be a couple of broken ones, but nothing unhappy. Not since the day he told Thunderaxe the tale of Happy McSlappy Slahafferson-Jones has there been a man this roughed up and loving it returning to the Enclosure.

He is singing a song that Derek taught him once, back before the Desert. His rust-and-coffin-nails voice is probably carrying over the journals, since his own has been innocently turned on and dangles from his unheeding hand:

"I'm a cowboyyyy; on a steel horse I ride! And I am wanted! Dead or alive!"

[Jack is coming back from hiatus a few days early because I will be gone all this upcoming weekend; Drusilla will be coming back probably next week sometime. Welcome to all new players and characters! 0/]

comments

Action & Written (Unfiltered): The Second Kidnapping

Jack has just enough time to slip out the kitchen door before the droids burst into Cullen House.

He would run for the Joanna Joyce, but he fears that the metal men will tear her apart before he can get underway.

He decides instead to run for the fort and the transporter, and that is where they corner him. He can hear them coming down the steps, their steel feet scraping and clicking against the stones, and opts to write a quick message to Buffy before the inevitable.

Darling Annie

They are coming for me. Don't --

Unfortunately, that is all the pirate manages before the droids grab hold of him. All that is left behind in the dark basement of the fort is the pirate's journal and his compass, which was accidentally-on-purpose dropped at the scene.

comments

Tenth Tide Turning ☠ Voice | Snippet of Video | Action

[VOICE]

For two years now, this here village has been supplied with the finest-quality low-cost and convenient marauding -- free to you -- by none other than the infamous and black-hearted Captain Jack Sparrow.

It has come to my attention that there are other would-be upstart blackguards who simply cannot hold a candle to him. They are tiny and blond and annoying. They do not deliver the kind of pirate-y experience that the average Lucetian desires, mostly because of their foul-smelling incompetence.

Also they are not good in bed.

[He sounds supremely triumphant after throwing that insult in.]

Remember this: when you think "marauding," you think Sparrow. When you think "oh blast it now I must hand over all my valuables," you think Sparrow. And when you think, "Oh who could that be, with his sword so fierce and deadly and that dashing hat and fine mustache?
Ninth Tide Turning ☠ Accidental Video

[A journal falls open on the bare chest of a man caught in a profoundly disturbed sleep. He moans and tosses in his nightmare, and there is a flash of gold in the early morning light as the locket he always wears is caught square in the journal's sights.

Then the plaintive mumbling ensues:]

Nnnnrrrrg. Burning. Whyzzit burning? Itching and burning. Not comfy.

[This is the voice of a man not-quite-awake with a Problem.]

comments

Eighth Tide Turning ☠ Action

When Jack fell asleep on Sunday night, he was cuddled close to his daughter, listening to the even rise and fall of her breathing -- holding her during the occasional intrusion of her dreams -- prepared to look after her for life. Forever, come what may.

Monday morning he woke up without her. A stretch -- a smile -- and a gentle kiss for the slayer. They will probably have some things to discuss: James Norrington, a date with the Hugheses, and why Buffy seems to have given the pirate back the jade ring he gave to her months before.

Later, there will be further odd discoveries. Why were there two small duck-shaped mittens in his coat pockets? He will contemplate this as he wanders back to Cullen House, where other strange things await. Buffy's oversized cushion has been moved into the spare room; and some unknown person has carved three unsteady letters into the surface of the kitchen table: J - O - Y.

He will trace these over for a rather long time, thinkity thinking. Katie's doing, probably.

After the ducky mittens are left neatly in front of her attic door, Jack will return to the village with a rather dire need for joy.

The pirate will contemplate this further while jacksledding in the general vicinity of the marauding bridge, behind House 35. Since he has a full flask in his pocket, he'll probably be occupied with this until well after dark. Searching searching searching. Things don't seem so bad anymore.

comments

Fourth Wall | Action

Feel free to encounter Sparrow, either Saturday or Sunday. On Saturday morning he will be <strike>pulling a Horatio Hornblower and brooding</strike> HAPPY to confront all comers in hopes of stealing a little prize for his little girl on the marauding bridge.

Sunday he'll be down by the Western Lake, pretending to be repairing the Rope Ship but REALLY just...<strike>being freaked out and needing to get away from everything for a while</strike> happy that his daughter is home. Thrilled, in fact, and he's repairing this playground especially for her.

Please label your thread either Saturday or Sunday! 0/

comments

Seventh Tide Turning ☠ Voice | Action

What comes over the journals is a harsh whisper: something like a whisper would sound if it were made of sharkskin and were rubbing up against a particularly unruly pinecone. And not in a good way.

[VOICE]

Kennedy. OI. Kennedy! Derek! Maturin! And Foxy Munster! Burgess, you shallop of madness, you. Needyerhelp. Ehind-bay the A-ground-play. Sharply, fellows.

[/VOICE]

Sparrow realizes, of course, that others would take interest in this project. Elizabeth, probably. Lupin, maybe. He's only signaling those outright that he trusts more-or-less, as the circumstance may be, and in Elizabeth's case....well. Some things are best kept from ladies, be they pirate kings or no.

( The reason WHY. )

comments

Important!

Originally Jack Sparrow was a member of the Luceti Livejournal cast with the username lists_to_port.

Everything below this post includes that old content, imported from Livejournal. You can access his old journal here. This might be useful for reading older entries with userpics in the comments, thus making them much more better.

Everything above this post is new Dreamwidth content for Luceti.

This journal is of course for entertainment purposes only. No one at Walt Disney Studios is knocking down my door to offer me a job as a writer, so THIS NON-MONEY-MAKING HOBBY will have to do.

comments
